Psychology

A psychologist can help your child with challenges around learning, potential negative behaviour, emotions or mental health challenges.

What is Psychology?

Psychological intervention at Koorana is provided as a individualised therapy option, working with the family and child to identify needs and to enhance the strengths of the child.

How will Psychology assist me?

Individual therapy may also work on engaging with and educating parents, with a focus on holistic support that enables the child to maximise their capacity to engage in a meaningful way in their community.

Koorana also provides psychology intervention via the implementation of a range of diagnostic and cognitive assessments which may be required by schools or in other settings.

Psychologists can support children and their parents to manage circumstances that may include:

  • Positive behaviour management;
  • Emotional regulation;
  • Social skills development; and
  • Developmental concerns such as developmental delay, autism, chromosomal disorders and genetic conditions.

Who is my Psychologist?

Koorana employs qualified Paediatric Psychologists to deliver this suite of services.

Where do Psychology sessions take place?

Psychology sessions can take place at a Koorana centre, in the home, classroom, or other community setting. Our team will work closely with you to establish a location that best suits your needs.

How long does it go for?

Individual sessions run for about 30-60 minutes. The total number of sessions varies with each child depending on your goals. Our team will talk to you to discuss the most appropriate course of action for your child.

What if I do not speak English?

We can arrange for an interpreter as per your needs.

Do I need a referral to access Psychology?

No, you do not need a referral from your GP to access Koorana’s services. However, if you wish to access Medicare funding, you will need to see your GP to check your eligibility and to obtain a treatment plan.

What is the cost of Psychology services at Koorana?

Prices are set according to the NDIS price guide. For NDIS participants with psychology funding the cost will be met entirely by your NDIS plan. Medicare rebates cover a percentage of treatment costs, as do private health funds where these include allied health services coverage. Please contact us to discuss the best funding options for you.
