Our Beginnings
Late in 1976 a group of local women got together and decided that they needed a “Centre” – a place to focus their Playgroup activities and provide them with relatively low cost preschool equipment and printing. This group approached Canterbury Council, and with Feveral Government funding, the Council purchased a house in Belmore which would become the home of the new centre.
The control of the Centre was passed over to the Canterbury Zone Playgroups on condition that they expand their services to parents and young children. So the Canterbury Municipal Preschool Community Centre Commity was formed. In 1987, the Committee decided to incorporate the Centre as an association and with this came the change of name of the Centre to Koorana Child and Family Centre Inc. In January 1989, the Centre moved from Leylands Parade to 33 Croydon Steet, where Koorana continued to support preschool children and their families.
The families and children attending the playgroups and preschools continued to enjoy the professional support provided, but it soon became apparent that the needs of the community were beyond what was currently on offer.
